Medley Moments: Edith Cooper and Mollie Marcoux Samaan

In this Medley Moments, Edith Cooper sits with Mollie Marcoux Samaan, Commissioner of the LPGA, to discuss her journey in sports, leadership, and the impact of golf on individuals and communities.

Q: Molly, let’s start with your impressive career in sports. Can you share a bit about your journey?

A: My career has been rooted in a love for sports and their ability to build leaders and communities. I started as a two-sport athlete at Princeton, playing soccer and ice hockey, and later moved into roles in youth, amateur, and college athletics. From there, I joined the LPGA as Commissioner, a role that’s been both challenging and rewarding.

Throughout my career, I’ve always believed that finding the right team is one of the most important decisions you can make.
Q: What drew you to sports initially, and how has that shaped your perspective?

A: From the moment I picked up a ball, I knew sports were my passion. They built my confidence and taught me leadership skills. Sports have this incredible power to connect people, and that belief has been a guiding principle throughout my career. I’ve also embraced the challenge of working in the business of sports, constantly pushing myself to grow and learn.

Q: You’ve emphasized teamwork throughout your career. How has that influenced your leadership style?

A: Teamwork is everything. I’ve always approached my roles with a focus on how I can contribute to the team’s success. I’ve learned that the most important word in the English language is “team.” My career choices often revolved around finding the right teams to join and fully committing to them. When I’m part of a team, my feet are exactly where I want them to be, and I’m focused on making a difference.

People on your team need to know that you genuinely care about the organization and about them as individuals. That’s been a cornerstone of my leadership approach.
Q: Transitioning to golf, what inspired you to take on the role of LPGA Commissioner?

A: The LPGA’s mission to empower women and girls through golf was deeply compelling. It’s a platform to make a significant impact, not just for professional athletes but also for young girls discovering the game. Taking on this role was a big leap, but one I felt passionate about. Along the way, I’ve experienced both successes and failures, and I’m grateful to those who supported me through it all.

Q: What has been the most rewarding part of your time at the LPGA?

A: Seeing the growth and resilience of our athletes has been inspiring. Golf is a challenging sport, both physically and mentally, and our players exemplify determination and grace. They know their role in inspiring young women and do so with incredible poise. They also understand the importance of connecting with fans and being ambassadors for the sport, which makes their impact even more profound.

Q: Under your leadership, the LPGA has achieved significant milestones, like increasing tournament purses. What are you most proud of?

A: I’m incredibly proud of the 80% increase in tournament purses, which has elevated the opportunities for our athletes. We’ve also improved player experiences, from geographic scheduling to providing health insurance. Another highlight is the strategic plan we’ve developed to guide the LPGA’s growth through 2030. Building resilience has been a recurring theme—both for our organization and for our athletes.

Q: The LPGA also focuses on fostering young talent. Can you elaborate on those efforts?

A: Through our foundation, we’ve introduced over a million young girls to golf. Our Girls Golf program is about more than creating future professionals; it’s about teaching life skills and empowering young women to succeed in all areas of life. It’s deeply fulfilling to see these young girls build confidence and resilience through the game.

Q: You’ve announced your decision to step down as Commissioner. What’s next for you?

A: While it’s bittersweet, it feels like the right time to transition. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished and excited to see the LPGA continue to thrive. Personally, I’m looking forward to exploring new opportunities to contribute to sports and leadership in meaningful ways.

Q: Molly, your leadership has been truly inspiring. Any final thoughts?

A: Sports, especially golf, have a unique way of connecting people and fostering growth. I’m grateful for the opportunity to have been part of this journey and excited to see what’s ahead for the LPGA and beyond.
